Christophe Galtier defends Sergio Ramos despite the red card

Reims hosted Paris Saint-Germain in the 10th round of 2022/23 Ligue 1 fixtures. In what was initially expected to be a winnable affair for the team from the French capital, Sergio Ramos got dismissed in the 41st minute of the game following an argument with the match referee, leading to a change in the mood of the contest.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, PSG manager Christophe Galtier defended the former Real Madrid captain, claiming that Ramos had not intended to insult the referee. As quoted by L’Équipe, Galtier said:

“I’m sure that Sergio didn’t mean to insult the referee. He used an expression that I hear hundreds of times all week on the pitch, that we also hear in the Championship. When we are angry, we say things, but it is an expression. I think the referee took it personally. But knowing how it goes, I had the same problem with José Fonte in Lille. The referee took it as an insult against him whereas it is an expression that is often said on the pitch.”

Despite going down to ten men, PSG put up a decent fight defensively but could not open the scoreline on the other end as well, completing their visit to the Stade Auguste-Delaune with the accumulation of only one point.
