Le Parisien reported over the weekend that 35-year-old right-sided player Dani Alves has delayed signing a contract extension that has been agreed with the club following the Ligue 1 leaders’ premature elimination from the Champions’ League vis-à-vis their intended target.
The Brazilian international’s current deal expires in June, but he has received a new deal offer from Les Parisiens, which would take his contract to 2020 with the option to extend by a further year.
In the middle of March, Alves went to the trouble of denying that a new deal was done and dusted with PSG via some emoticons over social media.
Before signing, Alves is not trying to negotiate better financial terms for himself, rather to understand the future transfer policy of the club – if players will be bought and sold and if so, who?

The newspaper claims that Alves’ felt that the recent elimination to Manchester United in the Champions’ League was a “humiliation” and “an intolerable disappointment”. In private, he regretted the lack of character shown by his team-mates, both those with experience and the younger players in the team. And he wants a radical overhaul of the squad.
One thing is for sure – Alves, who turns 36 in May, has the footballing ambitions of a young man. As the player with the most amount of titles to his name in the history of football (38), he still wants to play for a team at the highest level of the game – in the Champions’ League. He also intends to play for Brazil at the Copa America this June and to partake in the 2022 World Cup.
Are these unrealistic desires? Maybe, but Alves has been a key cog for PSG this season, first in a right-midfield role, and oftentimes as a central midfielder. This, despite being responsible for losing the ball that ultimately led to the Red Devils’ crucial 3rd goal in the Champions’ League…
When asked about Alves’ future last week pre the club’s clash against Nantes in the Coupe de France, Thomas Tuchel did not want to discuss it. Which is completely understandable considering that Alves is in total control of the situation.
