The South Dakota State University wrestling team begins the second half of a four-match road swing by traveling to North Dakota State Friday night for a Big 12 Conference dual.
Action is set for 7 p.m. at Scheels Center on the NDSU campus in Fargo, North Dakota. The dual is scheduled to be televised by Midco Sports Network and also available for viewing through FloWrestling.org (subscription required).
The Jackrabbits enter the Border Bell matchup 2-8 overall and 1-5 in the Big 12 Conference following a 32-9 setback at nationally ranked Wyoming on Feb. 10.
NDSU, meanwhile, enters Friday’s matchup with a 9-5 overall record, including a 4-3 mark in Big 12 competition. The Bison will be coming off a two-week layoff, with their last competition a 47-3 home victory over Utah Valley on Feb. 1.
Both head coaches – South Dakota State’s Damion Hahn and NDSU’s Roger Kish – were All-America wrestlers at the University of Minnesota. Hahn was a four-time All-American from 2001-04 and won back-to-back NCAA titles at 197 pounds as a junior and senior. Kish was an All-American at 184 pounds for the Golden Gophers in both 2006 and 2007.
THE SERIES: South Dakota State and North Dakota State will meet for the 65th time in dual competition, when the two programs clash Friday night at in Fargo. NDSU leads the all-time series between the two longtime rivals, 42-21-1, although the Jackrabbits have won the last four matchups.
SDSU swept a two-match season series during the 2015-16 campaign before posting consecutive victories at Frost Arena during the 2016-17 (20-18) and 2017-18 (22-12) seasons. The 2016-17 dual marked the first time the two squads faced off against each other with both teams in the Division I rankings.
In last season’s dual, Feb. 16, 2018, in Brookings, NCAA qualifiers David Kocer and Seth Gross each recorded technical falls to lead the Jackrabbits to a 22-12 victory before 2,324 fans. SDSU won six of the 10 bouts in closing out the dual season with a school-record 14-match winning streak and an 8-0 mark against Big 12 Conference opponents.

PANEL RANKINGS: South Dakota State’s Henry Pohlmeyer and Zach Carlson both remain in the NCAA Division I Wrestling Coaches’ Panel Rankings, the second installment of which were released Thursday.
A junior from Johnston, Iowa, Pohlmeyer is ranked 20th in the 149-pound weight class. He has posted an 18-9 overall record this season after earning a trip to nationals in the 141-pound division during the 2017-18 campaign.
Elsewhere, Pohlmeyer stands 13th in the TrackWrestling individual rankings, is ranked 17th by WIN Magazine and holds the 18th spot in the Intermat rankings. He also is ranked 20th by The Open Mat.
Carlson, a junior 184-pounder from Kerkhoven, Minnesota, fills the 32nd spot in the 184-pound NCAA panel rankings despite holding the 23rd-best

Conference allocations to the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships will be determined in part based on the panel rankings, with additional spots available on an at-large basis to fill the 330-wrestler field – 33 wrestlers in each of the 10 weight classes. SDSU competes at the Big 12 Conference Wrestling Championship March 9-10 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
A LOOK AHEAD: The Jackrabbits close out their three-week road swing by traveling to Big 12 Conference rival Oklahoma on Feb. 22. The dual is set for a 6 p.m. at Lloyd Noble Center on the OU campus in Norman and will be televised on FOX Sports Oklahoma.
Final home action for SDSU is Feb. 24, when the Jackrabbits host West Virginia in a 6 p.m. Senior Night dual at Frost Arena.
