Shilson wins national title, Augsburg 6th at WCWAs

MARIETTA, Ga. — Emily Shilson (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./Mounds View HS) captured the first individual national title in Augsburg University women’s wrestling history, winning the 109-pound crown at the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championships on Saturday at the Cobb County Civic Center. Augsburg finished in sixth place in the tournament with 75 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Shilson, the top seed at 109 in the tournament, went 4-0 during the two-day event, with two pins and two technical falls. She claimed a 42-second pin of Sugey Cega of Tiffin (Ohio) in the semifinals, then scored an 11-0 technical fall win in 5:00 over No. 2-seed McKayla Campbell of Campbellsville (Ky.) in th• e finals. Against Campbell, Shilson claimed a takedown and turn midway through the first period, then scored a takedown and two turns to win the national title with the technical fall.

Shilson’s semifinal match was settled early, as she brought Cega to the mat on a front headlock and converted it into a 42-second pin. Shilson is now 10-0 in collegiate meets this season.

Two Auggies reached the finals, but finished as national runners-up. Top-seeded Vayle-Rae Baker (FY, Benton, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) reached the 123-pound finals with an 8-7 win over No. 5-seed Adrianna Lopez of Campbellsville, but was edged 5-2 in the title match by No. 2-seed Julia Vidallon of Life (Ga.). Against Vidallon, Baker took a 2-0 lead with an attack on the boundary midway through the first period, but Vidallon scored the win with a pushout and two takedowns in the second period.

In her semifinal match, Baker opened the scoring with a takedown and back exposure to take a 4-0 lead, then scored a takedown at the end of the first period to lead 6-0. Lopez cut into the lead with a four-point feet-to-back move, and tied the match with a takedown with 1:56 left in the second period. Baker went ahead with a single-leg takedown with 50 seconds left, and only surrendered a pushout to reach the finals. Baker is now 16-3 on the year.

At 130, Augsburg’s Gabby Skidmore (FY, Spooner, Wis./Cumberland HS) reached the finals as the No. 2 seed with a 4-0 win over No. 3 seed Alex Enriquez of Life, then fell 6-1 to top-seed and defending national champion Abigail Nette of Campbellsville in the finals. All the scoring in the finals came in the first period, as Nette gained three takedowns and surrendered a one-point reversal by Skidmore.

In her semifinal, Skidmore scored three points on pushouts, then gained an additional point on an unsuccessful Enriquez challenge to win 4-0. Skidmore is now 12-3 on the season.

As a team, Augsburg finished sixth in its first-ever national tournament with 75 points. Campbellsville won the team title with 230 points, with Life finishing second with 113 and Jamestown (N.D.) finishing third with 111.5.
