ARLINGTON, TX — A Texas officer shot and killed a woman while firing at a dog that was barking and running toward him, police said.

Police in Arlington, a suburb of Dallas, said they were called to do a welfare check around 5:17 p.m. on Thursday for the report of a woman passed out in a grassy area. When police arrived along with EMS and fire officials to the area of Cantor Drive and N. Collins Street, they couldn’t immediately find the woman.

The person who called 911 initially directed authorities to the spot where the woman was last seen.

Police said the officer began to approach what appeared to be the woman lying in the grass but saw there also was an unrestrained dog. The officer called out to the woman repeatedly and the dog began to run toward the officer while barking, according to police.

In a statement, police noted that the area where the shooting happened was near a fence line “containing a heavily wooded area behind a commercial business that includes a sidewalk area.”

The cop fired at the dog charging toward him multiple times and after the shots were fired, the woman yelled out, making it apparent to cops that she was injured, police said.

The woman was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

NBC-DFW reported that the woman was identified as 30-year-old Margarita Brooks and that she is the daughter of a fire captain in the Arlington Fire Department. The Tarrant County medical examiner’s office ruled Brooks’ death a homicide with a gunshot wound to the chest, according to NBC.

The dog, a 40 pound lab mix, survived the shooting and is currently at the Arlington Animal Shelter in quarantine. Police believed the dog belonged to Brooks. NBC-DFW reported that people in the area often saw Brooks and her boyfriend, who appeared to be homeless, and they always had the dog with them.

Police said preliminary information shows the fatal shot woman came from the officer’s gun.

The shooting was captured on the officer’s body camera.Police said more facts will be released as the investigation progresses.
