Rubber foam makers suspected of cartel
EU’s competition authorities say they are investigating producers operating in a number of countries.
The European Commission announced today (3 August) that it has carried out surprise inspections of a number of manufacturers of foam rubber, because it suspects the companies of breaking EU antitrust rules.

The Commission has not named the firms involved, but said that they were active in “several member states”.
It said that its enquires specifically concerned the market for polyurethane foam, a type of foam rubber that it used to manufacture, among other items, foam seats, mattresses, cushions and insulation panels.
“Unannounced inspections are a preliminary step into suspected anti-competitive practices,” the Commission said.
The companies involved could be fined up to 10% of their annual turnover if they are found guilty of anti-competitive behaviour.
The Commission said that it had not set a deadline to complete its investigation.
