The gang-rape and murder of a 27-year-old veterinary doctor in Hyderabad last week was one of the most heinous cases of sexual assault in recent times. 

Due to the sheer brutal nature of the crime, many have compared it to the 2012 Delhi gang rape where a 23-year-old paramedical student was sexually assaulted and murdered by six men.

Many have also pointed out that in both cases the culprits were ‘uneducated’ bus or lorry workers.

But, what is happening online after the brutal crime shows there is something deeply wrong in our society. Many have blamed the victim for travelling alone at night for the rape. While victim-blaming in rape cases is nothing new, another development post the incident is outright scary. 

People are looking for videos of the victim on porn websites. Xvideos, one of the biggest porn streaming sites in the world saw a considerable amount of search volume using the victim’s name as keywords.

 According to reports, the keyword has been searched over 8 million times in the past few days and most of the searches came from two countries – India and Pakistan.

 While the website has yet to address the issue, a petition has been launched urging it to remove the victim’s name from the trends immediately.

Before you ask what kind of sick, perverted people want to see the video of a woman being brutally raped by four men who murdered and burnt her, let me tell you, this is not the first time this is happening.

Last year, after the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir, people were searching for her videos on porn websites.

This should not come as a total surprise as some of the most searched keywords by Indians on porn websites are “forced sex India” and “rape sex videos Indian”.

Indians are some of the highest viewers of porn anywhere in the world and accounted for the world’s third-largest consumer base at PornHub.

This porn addiction has been often blamed for the rising cases of sexual assault on women in the country. In several cases, rapists have admitted to watching porn movies before they committed the crime or were inspired by porn videos.

Last year, the government had banned access to several pornographic websites in the country, but people are still able to access other sites or even blocked ones using proxy networks.
