Prabal Gurung’s Fall 2019 Collection Had the Most Insane Jewelry — and Shoes to Match

Prabal Gurung may be taking a hiatus from producing footwear — but you wouldn’t know it from the eye-catching creations he’s sent out the past few seasons, including fall ’19, which he showed at New York Fashion Week on Sunday night.

From architectural heels for fall ‘18 to feathers galore for spring ‘19, the designer’s runway shoes are always some of the best of New York Fashion Week, and this editor is patiently waiting to snap up a pair of his cool but completely walking-friendly creations when the designer returns to footwear production (past seasons were done with Iris brand).

For now, Gurung is focusing his accessory efforts elsewhere, partnering with Japanese jewelry house Tasaki for a capsule of couture-level fine jewelry that was both decadent and symbolic of the craftsmanship ideals that Gurung has applied to his ready-to-wear. Among those details were brocade patchworks hand-loomed in the weaving mecca of Varanasi, India, and hand-painted metallic ombré motifs and cashmere hand-knit in Gurung’s Nepal.

The jewelry came in mostly pearls (Tasaki’s specialty), giant ear cuffs and chandelier earrings, some of which ran all way down to the chest. But don’t worry — there were still plenty of statement shoes to keep up with the jewels.

Among them was a series of leather and suede wavy striped ankle booties in wild color combos like teal and banana yellow, smart V-cut pumps and a few burgundy heels with lots of lilac-studded straps running across the front of the foot.
