2019 Grammys host Alicia Keys got some help from Michelle Obama last night. The former first lady appeared alongside some of music’s most influential women to talk about what music means to her. As soon as she began speaking, she was interrupted with a 25-second standing ovation.
The best-selling author took to the stage, hand in hand with Jada Pinkett Smith and Jennifer Lopez, modeling a shimmery charcoal-toned sequined suit paired with gold metallic sandals. The 55-year-old mother of two further accessorized with more sparkle, adding several rings and statement earrings.
It’s not unlike Mrs. Obama to reach for a suit — especially a glittering one. In December, the Harvard Law alum donned a sequined pantsuit to chat with Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” about her new memoir, “Becoming.”
Onstage, Obama shared: “From the Motown records I wore out on the South Side to the ‘Who Run the World’ songs that fueled me through this last decade, music has always helped me tell my story, and I know that’s true for everybody here.”
She continued: “Whether we like country or rap or rock, music helps us share ourselves, our dignity and sorrows, our hopes and joys. It allows us to hear one another, to invite each other in. Music shows us that all of it matters. Every story within every voice, every note within every song. Is that right, ladies?”
The former Flotus later took to Instagram to share a photo from the night and give Keys a shoutout. “For me, a big part of friendship is showing up for your girls—whether that’s for a birthday, a quick catch-up after work, or a major milestone. So I was thrilled to be there for the one and only @aliciakeys at the Grammys. She is one of the most genuine, caring, and thoughtful people I know—there’s no one better to help us all celebrate the unifying power of music,” she wrote.
