Donald Trump Responds to Melania Wearing an “I Really Don’t Care” Jacket to the Texas Border

When First Lady Melania Trump made a surprise visit to an immigration children’s detention center in McAllen, Texas, on Thursday, she let her outfit do the talking. She was photographed leaving Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland while wearing a Zara military trench coat with a graphic message on the back: “I Really Don’t Care. Do U?”

Unsurprisingly, people had strong feelings about the optics of this—including her husband Donald Trump.

Trump tweeted Thursday evening about Melania’s outfit. ““I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?” written on the back of Melania’s jacket, refers to the Fake News Media,” he wrote. “Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!”

Needless to say, not everyone interpreted the message the same way he did. Notable names from Hollywood and beyond were quick to condemn Melania for her choice of look.

CNN’s Jim Accosta reports that the First Lady’s spokesperson confirmed the text on the jacket, but said it wasn’t intended to have hidden meaning. “It’s a jacket. There was no hidden message. After today’s important visit to Texas, I hope the media isn’t going to focus on her wardrobe.”

Melania’s communications director Stephanie Grisham said much of the same.

As we pointed out then, the topic of the immigration has been heavily covered in the media. If you would like to know more or find ways to help, click here.
