Meghan Markle Shares This Sweet Move with Princess Diana

Queen Elizabeth almost always wears gloves while shaking hands at events. However, Princess Diana abandoned the practice — and Meghan Markle appears to have followed suit.

Despite the snow and chilly temperatures during her visit to Bristol with Prince Harry on Friday, the Duchess of Sussex carried her gloves as she shook hands with well-wishers gathered outside the Old Vic theatre.

The royal mom-to-be, 37, even told one fan, “Sorry my hand is cold!”

Eleri Lynn, the curator of an exhibit on Princess Diana’s style, previously told PEOPLE why the late royal opted for skin-to-skin contact.

“She abandoned the royal protocol of wearing gloves because she liked to hold hands when visiting people or shake hands and have direct contact,” said Lynn.

While the Queen is often seen in one of her famous wide-brimmed hats, Diana stopped wearing hats because she said, “You can’t cuddle a child in a hat.”

Since her royal wedding, Meghan has found subtle ways to pay tribute to Harry’s mother, who died in a 1997 car accident. She has inherited several pieces of Diana’s jewelry, including gold butterfly earrings and a gold bracelet.

The former actress even paid tribute to Diana on her wedding day, wearing her aquamarine ring as the couple headed to their evening reception.

Prince Harry and Prince William both gave their wives a special ring from their mother’s jewelry collection. While William poignantly gave Diana’s diamond and sapphire engagement ring to Kate Middleton when he proposed in 2010, Harry was able to mirror that gesture by giving his wife the aquamarine ring, which, it has now been revealed, was a gift for Diana to wear in place of her engagement ring after her divorce from Prince Charles in 1996.

Meghan has also paid tribute to Diana’s style. The Duchess of Sussex opted for a double pop of color when she visited the town of Birkenhead, Merseyside, with Harry earlier this month. She sported a purple Babaton by Aritizia dress under a red wrap coat by Sentaler, worn with a belt tied just above her growing baby bump.

The color combination is definitely unexpected, but it’s been done before. Princess Diana blended the bold hues on several occasions, most memorably during a 1989 trip to Hong Kong when she paired a purple skirt with a red cardigan topped by a hat featuring both shades.

Diana also wore a one-shoulder evening gown featuring the eye-grabbing colors to a dinner in Bangkok, Thailand, in 1988.
