It Seems That Mumbai Is Set To Get Its First Ever Woman Police Chief

It will be history in the making if Mumbai is to get its first female police commissioner. That will happen if the current holder of the post Sanjay Barve does not get an extension when his term expires on August 31.

The lady in question is Rashmi Shukla. The competition she faces is from Parambir Singh, the director general of the Anti-Corruption Bureau. Should she be appointed commissioner, she will be the first woman to hold the post. She has also served as police commissioner in Pune. Currently she is state intelligence commissioner.

According to a TOI report, a senior official said that the decision would be taken by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, as to whether or not Barve got an extension. It happened back in 2008 when the then DGP PS Parischa and the then Mumbai police commissioner DN Jadhav were granted 3-month extensions post retirement. The Bombay High Court set aside the decisions as it felt that these extensions are not good for the careers of junior officers.

So it remains to be seen if a female commissioner is appointed, but the odds are pretty high. Should it happen, it shall be a new era for Mumbai Police as it looks to break more stereotypes.
