Here’s How You Can Help The Homeless And Less Fortunate When Weather Takes A Turn For The Worse

The cool monsoon breeze has probably brought a smile to your face. And winter usually makes you want to snuggle in your blanket with a hot cup of coffee… It’s great to enjoy some of life’s sweetest offerings.

It wouldn’t be too far from the truth to say it’s a luxury few can afford to enjoy. Because what to you is perfect weather, is a tough existence for people in need.

The homeless are also humans just like us. They don’t know where their next meal is coming from or whether it’s coming at all. Sadly, no one gives a second thought to the homeless who have made the city streets their home, and when you take life-threatening weather in to account, they’re usually the one who end up paying the price first.

Mumbai was struggling to stay afloat as heavy rain hit the state of Maharashtra. The first spell of rain disrupted life in the city; it has been reported that Mumbai received the heaviest rain in a decade.

The city’s trains, considered to be Mumbai’s lifeline, were running late by 10 to 15 minutes, one officer said. Even buses were diverted from their regular routes.

Don’t Miss

And in all this chaos, the homeless were left with no option but to take shelter in abandoned houses. So, spare a thought for the people who don’t have the means to get the care they deserve. The least we can do is help them.

If you spot anyone in need on the streets asking for food or shelter, do you bit and help them.

Here are some other things you can do to help them:

1. Share your roof with them.

If you feel that you can help them, without compromising your safety, do what you can. Look for other people and things in your immediate area that could increase the odds of you being able to help. If you think that you can’t help them then look for somebody who can.

The best help you can do is to provide them shelter and food.

2. Take them to the hospital if needed.

In this tough time, do not shy away from lending a helping hand to the homeless. People are going through a lot of problems. Like in the year 2018, a 27-year-old woman who was mentally disturbed was admitted to a shelter by Matunga police, Mumbai after it was discovered that she was seven months pregnant.

So don’t hesitate to help people, they might be in dire need of help.

3. Donate necessary items to them.

If you have extra things at home that can help the homeless, donate them. Donate the essential things like umbrellas, raincoats, plastic sheets, clothes etc. You can also donate pads and tampons to homeless girls because these necessities are really expensive, unavoidable monthly cost for many families.

In the year 2018, Vimal, an IT professional from Mumbai created a post using PowerPoint where he added the story and asking people to contribute umbrellas. While most of them decided to send umbrellas at the office address he had mentioned, many of them came forward to contribute cash to buy umbrellas.

4. Keep a first aid kit handy.

If you come across any person who is injured, first aid kits can be of help. The first aid box contains bandage, ointments, tape etc. If there is severe need of hospital, you can call the hospital and ask for an ambulance, if you can’t take the person to hospital.

5. Feed those in need.

Don’t forget to feed homeless around your homes. It will take efforts, but will mean a great deal to people who have no body to take care of them.
