In a major development, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government has appointed new chiefs for the external spy agency, Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) and the Intelligence Bureau (IB). Samant Goel IPS has been appointed as the new chief of RAW while Arvinda Kumar IPS is the new Director of the IB. Both are 1984 batch IPS officers.
Goel was till now heading operations for RAW and was reportedly one of the planners of the February 26 Balakot airstrikes inside Pakistan. The Punjab cadre IPS officer also has experience in fighting extremism in Punjab during the 1990s and is regarded as an expert on Pakistan.
Kumar, an Assam-Meghalaya cadre IPS officer has experience in tackling left-wing extremism. He is also regarded as an expert on Kashmir.
