IKEA is a name synonymous with furniture, but they’re not happy doing the same thing for years on end.
So now, the Scandinavian company is teaming up with robotics company Ori for something truly innovative. Furniture that can change and move itself.

Dubbed ROGNAN, the new furniture line is expected to launch in 2020. IKEA says the idea is to “empower people to have big dreams for small homes.” So what exactly is robotic furniture?
They don’t have actual pieces ready yet, but there are a few renderings to show off. One of those is a giant wardrobe with a couch attached on one side and a bed on the other. The idea is that your furniture should be modular to fit your needs in a limited space. In this case, at the push of a button, the bed slides under the unit and offers you empty space to use as you see fit.
Don’t Miss
Additionally, the entire unit can also slide back and forth on tracks, offers storage, and even has a retractable desk. The goal for IKEA is to fit room essentials like a bed, chair space, desk, and storage, in just a 10 square meter area.

IKEA and Ori see this as the perfect kind of furniture for the future, as people flock to the urban centres of their country for employment, where there’s already limited real estate available. “Urban space is too valuable and scarce to be static and unresponsive,” as Ori says on its website.
