The country’s Sunday newspapers have suggested the pair are having an affair and that there has also been an incident involving them at a Mbombela hotel.
Allegedly booked a guesthouse
SA Rugby’s statement said that although no team protocols were breached at the hotel around the New Zealand game on August 6, the duo would travel home.
According to Rapport, Jantjies, who is married with children, did not stay in the team’s hotel and instead booked a guesthouse during that Mbombela week.
It is also alleged that the 32-year-old did not pay the full R26,000 bill until the owners launched a complaint to the South African Rugby Union (SARU).
“The Springbok management are aware of reports regarding Springbok flyhalf Elton Jantjies and team dietician Zeenat Simjee between the training camp in Sabie and the Test match against New Zealand in Mbombela earlier this year,” read the SA Rugby statement.
“No team protocols were breached, but the individuals are returning to South Africa to attend to these personal reports and to eliminate any distractions to the team’s preparations for the Test against Argentina.
Distraction ahead of Pumas game
“No further comment will be made at this time.”
The Springboks are currently in Argentina ahead of taking on Los Pumas in a must-win clash as the Rugby Championship goes right down to the wire in 2022.
Jacques Nienaber’s team currently sit on nine points alongside Australia and Saturday’s opponents Argentina, with New Zealand out in front on 10 points.
