Racing 92 star Finn Russell has joined up with the Scotland squad ahead of their game against New Zealand in the Autumn Nations Series on Sunday.

The 30-year-old was controversially left out of the initial group for the end-of-year internationals, with head coach Gregor Townsend stating it was down to form.

Russell has since impressed with his club side Racing and once again played a starring role for the Parisians in their Top 14 victory over Perpignan at the weekend.

Big hit on Adam Hastings

It is an injury to Adam Hastings which has opened the door for the British and Irish Lion after the Gloucester fly-half was forced off due to a huge hit by Fiji’s Ratu Leone Rotuisolia on Saturday.

Following the 28-12 triumph, Townsend has asked whether Russell had a chance of being called up if Hastings was ruled out.

“If Adam is out, Finn would be in the mix, of course,” Scotland’s head coach said.

“If people are not in the squad, I don’t phone them up regularly unless there’s something to talk about. But I’d imagine he’d be available.

“He was disappointed not to be in the squad. If we decide to bring another 10, he’ll be one of the ones we’ll be looking at.”

Competing with Blair Kinghorn and Ross Thompson

Blair Kinghorn took the fly-half berth for the 16-15 defeat to Australia before Hastings was handed the role for the Test with Fiji on Saturday.

Glasgow Warriors’ Ross Thompson is also in the squad and was on the bench for their Autumn Nations Series opener against the Wallabies.

Russell is back in the mix, however, and could play a role in Scotland’s encounter with the All Blacks this Sunday.

After that game with Ian Foster’s men, the Scots finish their end-of-year campaign against Argentina on November 19.
