Selfless Patu looking to guide Wallaroos pack

Wallaroos front-rower Liz Patu is ready for the 'new challenge' old rivals Black Ferns will present ahead of their Rugby World Cup opener at Eden Park.Patu will look to become the first Wallaroo to 30 caps in Saturday's opener in front of a packed-out crowd. The 33-year-old has been a cornerstone of the front-row since her debut in 2014.However, the milestone almost didn't happen for Patu, signing a deal in America to play Gridiron, before COVID put an end to it.“It’s definitely something I’m going to hold dear to myself,” Patu told Rugby.com.au about playing in front of a packed house.“I was potentially heading down that different path but at the same time, Rugby is always going to be the number one priority for me.“Hearing that we are having a sold-out crowd, that’s just at the top of my list.“I never thought I was going to get to where I am now without the support of my family and club“I wouldn’t be able to do that without the support of the girls so it’s about keeping going and getting on track, trying to get on the same level as the young girls coming in, chasing that next step.”Patu is looking to guide a new generation of Wallaroos through the hallmark event as they look to book their spot in the knock-out stages.Whilst she sett the record for most Wallaroos caps earlier in the season, Patu deflects praise whenever she can to her teammates, praising their culture and growth throughout 2022.“It’s about the combination and not me, I’ve always had the mindset that it’s not about me, it’s about the girls,” Patu said.“All I can do is support and guide the girls in a way that I know I can leave that jersey in a better position.“The culture we’ve built around our team and what we need to do, the excitement that the young girls and the new faces have brought has been good“Every day we’re at training we’re doing something new and we just need to stick to the structures.”Patu's early physicality has been a consistent theme of the Wallaroos' strong showings against the Black Ferns in 2022.She opened the scoring in Tauranga during Pacific Four whilst a brutal run over Black Ferns' centre Chelsea Semple laid the platform for their opening try in Adelaide. It was a notable omission in Christchurch when the Wallaroos went down 52-5, looking to make an impact as she focuses on the job at hand.“It’s just another Rugby game we have to go into,” Patu reiterated.“It’s always going to be tough going into New Zealand and all we have to do is nature and guide these young girls as senior players.“It’s always a new challenge New Zealand brings.“Our aim is to stick together, do what we’ve been given and the structures we’ve worked on.“The game in Adelaide was a massive confidence booster and the girls went out there and gave it all so it was really good.”Click Here:
