On August 29, 1992, WWE held the 5th SummerSlam pay-per view from Wembley Stadium in London, England. WWE reported that over 80,000 patrons entered through the Wembley Stadium turnstiles to see the show that day, making it one of the largest events the company had ever produced and has only been surpassed in attendance by three WrestleManias (3, 29 and 32). It was reported that the company earned a revenue of $2.7 million from the event, as well.
The main event match of Bret Hart and the British Bulldog clashing over the Intercontinental title is regarded as one of the greatest matches in SummerSlam history and a visual testament of two of the greatest performers of the 1990’s. Sprinkle in the Road Warriors riding to the ring on motorcycles in full regalia, Roddy Piper playing “Scotland the Brave” on bagpipes and the drama-filled rematch of Randy Savage and the Ultimate Warrior for the WWE title, you have one of the more memorable pay-per view cards during WWE’s transition from the “Golden Era” to the “New Era.”
Since that show, WWE has seldom held large pay-per views and events outside of the United States and Canada. England hosted bi-yearly pay-per views during the Attitude and Ruthless Aggression eras in the form of Rebellion and Insurrextion, as well as having one-off shows like “One Night Only” and “Capital Carnage” in the late ‘90’s. But in recent years, WWE has rarely gone “across the pond” for anything lengthier than a tour of several U.K. cities twice a year. In December 2015, NXT held a special Takeover event in London that aired live at 8 p.m. GMT and 4 p.m. EST, as well as holding the “United Kingdom Championship Tournament” in early 2017 that introduced the WWE Universe to the likes of Pete Dunne and Tyler Bate. While WWE is showing more and more interest in holding events in the U.K., they very well may be building to the grandest event of them all.
