Amid rampant rumor and speculation about his future, former UFC fighter-turned-pro-wrestler Matt Riddle has dropped the Evolve Championship.
Saturday night the stars of WWN invaded the legendary 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, PA for Evolve 108, headlined by a heavily anticipated Hardcore Rules match between (now former) Evolve Champion Matt Riddle and one of the hottest rising stars on the indie wrestling scene today, Shane Strickland. The two went to war in a brutal battle to send the fans home satisfied, but when the dust had settled it was the high-flying sensation Strickland standing tall as your brand new Evolve Champion.

It has been rumored for months now, with numerous outlets essentially reporting it as “just a matter of time” that Matt Riddle is heading to WWE in the very near future. The rumors were all but confirmed when California “super indie” PWG announced that the King of Bros had pulled out of their annual Battle of Los Angeles tournament in early September.
Currently, Riddle is scheduled to finish out the ongoing tour between EVOLVE and PROGRESS Wrestling, who is currently in the United States for a two-week tour. After that, he’s free to land anywhere he chooses, including NXT Takeover: Brooklyn on August 18th. We’ll be attending next weekend’s PROGRESS show in Chicago, IL to talk with Matt and several of the UK promotion’s stars, so we will hopefully have an update on this situation soon.
