Vince Russo recently took exception with an episode of the Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard podcast. Russo’s issue with the show revolves around Prichard’s assertion that The Rock actually hated the idea of turning heel in 1997.
Longtime WWE fans remember that Rocky’s turn during that time ultimately spawned the creation of The Rock, the character that continues to endure to this day.
Bruce claimed that Russo pitched the idea of turning heel to The Rock but The People’s Champ was not thrilled with the move. However, when Prichard and Jim Ross contacted Rocky, they pitched the idea and he readily accepted it. Evidently, fans are to believe that Vince Russo did not have a magic touch in this instance, yet Bruce and JR did.
But Russo has responded on Twitter with a link to a YouTube video featuring The Rock. In that video, Rocky says it was Vince McMahon who called him and gave him the idea of becoming an antagonist.
While it’s true that Russo has historically not been a fan favorite for much of his pro wrestling career, it’s also true that he and Prichard have not been on the best of terms either. No one really knows the truth behind the story of course, with the exception of a select few individuals.
Yet The Rock’s own words suggest that Vince McMahon himself was the mastermind behind the turn that catapulted Rocky to superstardom in WWE. With that kind of proof, is there any way that fans could believe anyone else’s view on the topic at this point?
"Russo had called Rocky and pitched it, but Rocky didn't want to be a heel. He didn't want to do it. So Jim Ross and I got on the phone with him and pitched it, and he started going-OK, I can do that."
