The Sun out of the UK published an interview with John Morrison last week. The interviewer asked the former ECW Champion about his recent drug suspension. Before he could answer, a WWE representative quickly interjected himself into the conversation to say “No comment.” The WWE representative then told the interviewer to change the subject matter of their questions. Furthermore, the interview has since been deleted off of the website. You can read it here though:
The Sun’s Interview With John Morrison
When we were told we would be interviewing John Morrison on the WWE’s tour of the UK we were excited.
After all here was a man with something to talk about.
He was recently suspended for 30 days stripped of his beloved ECW title after allegations he had been buying steroids and human growth hormone over the Internet.
So this chat would be John’s chance to give his defence or simply admit his guilt and tell how the WWE have helped him clean up.
Instead a representative of the federation interrupted and insisted on “no comment” before the 28-year-old could speak for himself.
Below is the transcript of our interview.
The Sun: You are one of the guys in line to fight CM Punk for the ECW title at Cyber Sunday. Are you worried fans might vote for someone else as they’ve seen you guys wrestle so often?
John: I would say that me and CM Punk are two of the youngest superstars in the WWE and our rivalry is very heated. We are both unorthodox and innovative and the matches we have are very different and interesting each time. We are also in a game of oneupmanship, always adapting to each other’s creativeness by trying to do something even better. Either fans are going to vote for me or they won’t but if they want to see the best match at Cyber Sunday they know who to pick.
The Sun: Do you have more freedom in ECW to put together innovative matches as opposed to, say, Raw where management may be more controlling?
John: I have always been free to do whatever I want, although ECW presents more opportunity to do things you can’t see on the other shows. That’s why ECW is the most entertaining programme right now. It’s the newest show, has the freshest faces, it’s always different and you never know what to expect.
The Sun: Was your name change from Johnny Nitro to John Morrison a purposeful attempt to get across a new character?
John: John Morrison is a whole different part of my personality that has exploded and really developed in ECW, which had not been there before on Smackdown or Raw. Johnny Nitro was a stage name, but John Morrison is more fitting of who I am. Everything comes more naturally to me now as I’m not acting any more, I’m just being myself.
The Sun: How did being suspended for a month affect you?
As John starts to speak, the WWE’s American PR Justin runs over.
WWE’s Justin: No comment.
The Sun: OK. John, can you say if you regret what happened?
WWE’s Justin: This is not a topic that we want to discuss. This interview is about us being here in England.
The Sun: Can we just have one comment, as this is an important issue for our readers and John’s fans in England.
WWE’s Justin: The comment is no comment.
John: I have no comment.
The Sun: Well then, what is it like being back in the ring again now?
John: I have had a lot of time to myself and used that time to think about who I am and what I want to become as an entertainer and a person. There are a lot of things that I hsve improved and learned lately that I’m excited to put into use in the future.
The Sun: Are you still in a relationship with Melina and is it difficult with her on Raw and you on ECW?
John: Yes, we are still an item. We don’t see each other that much as we’re rarely home and still in different cities. It is very difficult as wrestling is an egotistical business and a lot of people are out for themselves. A lot of people will see someone like Melina, feel lonely on the road and might want to ‘have a go’ so to speak. But it’s the same for me a lot of Divas must think: “Damn, John Morrison is sexy.” So it’s hard for both of us but when we have time off, which is rare, we do something special.
The Sun: Are you still in touch with your former tag team partner, Joey Mercury, who was let go by the WWE?
John: We see each other every week, or every other week when we’re travelling lots. We watched the last PPV together me, him and Matt Cappotelli.
The Sun: How is Matt doing?
John: He is still fighting his malignant brain tumour and undergoing proton radiation therapy and chemotherapy at the same time. They are going to shortly re-asses whether he needs to continue treatment or if it’s done. He is thinking about one day wrestling again, but it’s not something he can know.
The Sun: If you got a call tomorrow to go to Raw or Smackdown what would you say?
John: I wouldn’t want to go. I like ECW and I feel proud. I feel like since the draft with me, Big Daddy V and The Miz coming over we’ve really improved the show and it’s shown in the ratings.
The Sun: When you were ECW champion did you feel it was treated as a secondary title to the Raw and Smackdown belts?
John: We’re all billed as champions but the house shows are billed as Raw and Smackdown events. But hopefully that will change and it has been changing.
