Mikheil Saakashvili: the unlikely face of Ukraine’s protest movement

As he walked down the hall to his office, former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili, now Ukraine’s most wanted man, flashed a smile at a photographer waiting inside, then slammed the door.

Minutes later, seated in front of the flags of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and the European Union, he had replaced his parka jacket with a gray blazer and his scowl with a conspiratorial charm.

Supporters in the next room were drafting statements about the “illegal” charges against Mr Saakashvili – he is under investigation in Ukraine for assisting a criminal organisation, as well as being wanted in Georgia on four charges including abuse of office.

They were also working on the anti-corruption demonstration…
