New film about Mussolini poses awkward questions about Italy’s attitude to Fascism as election looms

As an alliance of Right-wing parties scents victory in Italy’s general election, a film which imagines Benito Mussolini rising from the dead poses uncomfortable questions about the country’s lingering attitudes towards Fascism.

The movie, Sono Tornato or I’m Back, which opens in 400 cinemas across the country on Thursday, is a comedy mockumentary in which the Fascist dictator mysteriously comes back to life and tours contemporary Italy.

Neither an apology for, nor an outright condemnation of Fascism, it is nonetheless a reminder of the long shadow that Mussolini still casts over Italy, as the country heads to a general election on March 4.
