OREM, Utah — South Dakota State Senior Cody Pack has been named the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week, as announced by conference officials Tuesday afternoon.
Pack went 4-0 at the 22nd Annual Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open on Sunday. The two-time NCAA qualifier recorded two tech. falls en route to his first Dak Open title after losing in the championship bout the previous two seasons.
Following a first-round bye, Pack beat Minot State’s Devin Combs and Nebraska’s Austin Chuancey 21-4 and 18-0, respectively. The reigning WWC champ took down two Arizona State foes to cap off his title as he beat Joel Smith 5-2 in the semis and Gene Pierce in the finals.
“This is a great start for Cody,” head coach Chris Bono said, “but everything he does this season is building towards March.”
Pack and redshirt freshmen Colin Holler were the first Jackrabbits since 2010 to win a Dak Open championship. This is the third time Pack has been named the WWC Wrestler of the Week as he won the award the weeks of January 28 and February 18 last season.
SDSU returns to the mat Nov. 8 at the Bison Open in the Fargodome.
