ST. CLOUD, MINN. – November is here, which means the St. Cloud State University wrestling season is finally upon us. The Huskies opened the 2019-20 season in outstanding fashion, as they partook in the exhibition match and unveiled the 2019 National Champions Banner in Halenbeck Hall Gymnasium Friday evening.
The Black/Red Intersquad meet allowed St. Cloud State to show off its incredible depth entering the upcoming 2019-20 season. The Black team, though, which featured six NCAA national qualifiers, was able to come away with the victory, beating the Red team by a final score of 40-0.
The Black team was dominant in its first two matches of the night, as Brandon Bettancourt (Clovis, Calif.) and #3 Garrett Vos (Bonifacius, Minn.) both won by decision. Bettancourt defeated Robby Horsman (Kasson, Minn.) by decision 13-5 before Vos recorded won of the most dominant wins of the night, beating Ashton Clark (Park Rapids, Minn.) by decision 19-4.
Black extended its lead to 17-0 thanks to two more wins by #11 Garrett Aldrich (Albert Lea, Minn.) and #2 James Pleski (Stacy, Minn.). Aldrich won the 141-pound match over Joey Biachni (Elk Grove Villiage, Ill.) 6-3 before Pleski delivered a 20-3 win over Blake Legred (Bricelyn, Minn.) at 149.
The match at 157 pounds proved to be one of the most exciting of the evening, as freshman Colby Njos (Anoka, Minn.) nearly upended Jake Brazowski (Park Ridge, Ill.), who entered the season as the #1 wrestler in the nation at that weight class. With under 15 seconds remaining in the final round, Njos took down Brazowski to even the score at 5-5. However, with two seconds, Brazowski managed to score a single point, winning the match at 6-5 and extending the Black team lead to 20-0.
Another exciting match occurred at 197, as redshirt sophomore Noah Ryan (Mantorville, Minn.) defeated Riley Vanik (Sugar Grove, Ill.) 3-2. With the two wrestlers knotted 1-1 late in the third quarter, Ryan came up with a take down with roughly one minutes remaining to take a 3-1 lead over Vanik. While the other redshirt sophomore managed to earn one point with an escape, he was unable to tie the match or take a lead, resulting in the 3-2 victory for Ryan.
Devin FitzPatrick (Mahtomedi, Minn.) opened the season with a pin of Jackson Held (Royalton, Minn.) at 165 pounds, ending the match in quick fashion with 1:47 remaining in the first round. Kolton Eischens (Pierz, Minn.) kept the good times rolling, winning by decision at 174-point by a score of 8-3.
At 184, Tyree Overton (Rock Island, Ill.) defeated Grant Parrish (Kasson, Minn.) 16-2, boosting Black’s score to 34-0. In the heavyweight battle, Kameron Teacher (Columbus, Ohio) made his St. Cloud State debut with a 3-2 win over Ezayah Oropeza (Burnsville, Minn.), clinching the 40-0 victory for the Huskies.
In the exhibition matches, Eric Halverson (Pewaukee, Wis.) defeated Nic Cantu (Albert Lea, Minn.) 7-2 at 133 pounds. Cameron Riggs (North Platte, Neb.) defeated Legred 7-1 at 149, and in the 165 exhibition, Brock Schlough (Menomonie, Wis.) defeated Jackson Held (Royalton, Minn.) 12-11.
As a team, St. Cloud State took a moment to raise a banner for its 2018-19 National Championships, the Huskies fourth Division II Wrestling Title in the past five years.
St. Cloud State will officially open the season on November 9 when the team competes in the Northeast Duals in Troy, New York.
