For this week’s episode of NXT, Undisputed Era leader Adam Cole faced off against Matt Riddle in the main event. The two of them have had a couple of issues over the past few weeks, and given the recent dissension within the Undisputed Era as of late, it will be interesting to see who comes out ahead on that bout. The rest of the show features more matches and stories from WWE’s rising stars, and it kicked off with a match between two of the top female stars in NXT right now: Bianca Belair and Mia Yim.
Bianca Belair vs. Mia Yim –
Yim and Belair have had their squabbles for a while now, but this match was made to determine who is truly the very best between the two of them. Both women want a shot at Shayna Baszler’s NXT Women’s Championship. Their fight in the Performance Center last week led to this match being made official.
Both women locked up as the crowd was split on who they wanted to win. Both knew each other very well as they blocked armbar and dropkick attempts. Belair punched Yim down to the canvas but the latter took control with a kick. Belair then tried to wear her opponent down with a headlock in the middle of the ring. Bianca splashed off of the ropes and splashed onto Yim for just a two-count.
Belair got her up, Him dodged a corner tackle, but Belair caught her and dropped Yim’s face across the top turnbuckle. Yim tried to fight her way back into the match but Belair swatted her away while mocking her the entire time. Yim tried to pin Belair, and she then locked the formerly undefeated athlete into a triangle. After fighting out of that, Belair grabbed Yim’s head and went back to work. She went for another splash, but Yim moved out of the way just in time.
Yim fired back with some shots and a dropkick, sending Belair into the corner of the ring. Cannonball roll into the corner next followed by a tarantula in the ropes on Belair. Yim went for a sunset flip but Belair didn’t fall for that one. Yim nearly had Bianca pinned for a moment, but Belair countered it and pinned Yim. However, Belair wrapped her long braid around the rope and held onto it to get the pin. Because the referee did not see this, Belair still won the match.
Winner: Bianca Belair
NXT Tag Team Champions The Viking Raiders were shown leaving the WWE Performance Center after training there. They were suddenly attacked by The Forgotten Sons and were left laying. It was clear that they want a shot at the tag team titles as soon as possible.
Shayna Baszler was shown training fellow Horsewomen Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir at the Performance Center. All of a sudden, Io Shirai ran into the ring and attacked the champion. Shirai is still upset with Baszler after she brutally attacked her former tag team partner, Kairi Sane. The brawl was eventually broken up by the other women and trainers in the PC.
Raul Mendoza vs. Riddick Moss –
Riddick Moss is back in action since injuring himself last year, and he appears to have been completely repackaged. He is no longer teaming up with Tino Sabbatelli, and he had a new entrance video and music. Moss towered over Mendoza in this match, so how did he do in his first match back on NXT television in several months?
He went right after the Luchador and tried to take control of the match, but Mendoza was much too quick for Moss. Moss took breaks throughout the match and appeared to use exceeding equipment to get himself back into the swing of the match. They didn’t do much though as Mendoza hit a flurry of kicks, punches, standing moonsault a on more on Moss.
Moss then hit a big clothesline and celebrated by doing some pushups in the corner. He lifted Mendoza night into the air and slammed him down to the canvas for a two-count. He went outside and then grabbed a water bottle. Moss wanted to rehydrate Mendoza, but he came back hard with a series of shots to the shins. Mendoza tripped Moss into the turnbuckle before hitting a twisting splash over the ropes. Raul Mendoza was able to pin Moss after this. He celebrated his rare win in the ring as Moss stared on in disbelief.
Winner: Raul Mendoza
Highlights of KUSHIDA’s NXT debut from last week were shown. The former New Japan Pro Wrestling star was able to defeat Kassius Ohno with the Hoverboard Lock. The NXT announcers then confirmed that KUSHIDA’s next match will be taking place on next week’s show.
Matt Riddle vs. Adam Cole –
Riddle was as delighted as ever when he came down to the ring for this match, but as usual, he was all business once he got in the ring. He took on Adam Cole in this match. Cole has had issues with Riddle, Johnny Gargano, and even his own Undisputed Era members as of late, so this was described as a pivotal match for the former North American Champion.
Cole did not star off the match so great. In fact, Riddle overpowered him tremendously. He grabbed him by the waist and took him down hard. Cole took a moment to compose himself outside of the ring, but Riddle did not let up on his offense. Side headlock applied to Cole before then dropping onto his back with a senton. Riddle goes for a pin but Cole kicks out. Riddle charged after Cole with a knee strike, missed and hopped on the second turnbuckle, then Cole grabbed his foot and dragged him down.
Adam Cole took over at last and went for one of Riddle’s arms. Kicks in the corner from Riddle followed by several forearm shots. Cole hit a neckbreaker afterwards and then locked in the Dragon Sleeper in an attempt to put “The Original Bro” to sleep. Riddle did fight out of the move, but Cole elbowed him back down. Cole proclaimed that he is the uncrowned champion and Riddle is just a joke. Riddle did ktmcare for those remarks.
Matt Riddle fires back with chow to the chest and a big suplex. Kip up from the former MMA fighter. Riddle bounced onto Cole and hit him with a stiff kick to the chest for another two-count. Cole tried to hit an enzuigir, but Riddle dodged the maneuver and dropped Cole again. Cole shoved Riddle into the corner and for him onto his shoulders briefly. Riddle hopped back down, bounced off of the ropes but got kicked in th pen head for his troubles. Back on Cole’s shoulders Riddle goes, and he falls right onto Cole’s knee. Backstabber to Riddle next for a very close two-count.
Both trades chops to the chest as they rose back to their feet. Riddle grabbed acole by the neck, but Cole stomped on Riddle’s feet. Cole tried to hit a Superkick, but Riddle put him in an anklelock. When Cole got to the ropes, Riddle briefly put him in the Bromission, but Cole got out of the move. Cole hit another big knee strike on Riddle p, but that still wasn’t enough for him to win, much to his dismay.
More chops to the chest from Cole. Cole went for a Canadian Destroyer, Riddle counters it, Cole gets back out and hits the Last Shot. Can he get the pin? Nope! Riddle becomes just the second man in NXT to kick out of the Last Shot. Riddle hit a knee strike, a GTS, and a big kick to send Cole outside of the ring.
Roderick Strong came down to the ring and aided Cole outside. Riddle walked out onto the apron and gave a penalty kick to Strong. Cole saw an opportunity to strike, and he hit Riddle with a Superkick as he came back into the ring. Cole went for another pin attempt, and at the last possible second, Riddle countered it into the Bromission to score a huge submission victory.
Winner: Matt Riddle
Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly immediately ran down to the ring. The Undisputed Era members gathered in the ring, and Strong and Cole nearly came to blows right then and there. Fish and O’Reilly tried to stop the from fighting, but they continued to bicker at each other from opposite side of the ring. The Full Sail crowd did not want to see these men fight. Eventually, Fish and Strong left together hole Cole and O’Reilly left the arena after they were gone. Cole could be heard blaming all of his big losses over the last weeks week’s on Roddy.
The Undisputed Era are still a cohesive unit, but for how much longer? That will be interesting to see as the weeks go by. For now thoug, Matt Riddle earned a hard-fought victory after losing his first NXT match at Takeover: New York last month. Meanwhile, challengers are lining up for Shayna Baszler and The Viking Raiders, so it will be interesting to see what the next top title feuds will be. NXT now has another Takeover show set for June, so expect details on the event to surface on NXT very soon. See you NXT time!
