B.A.A. High Performance Coach Terrence Mahon Named Women’s Coach of Team USA at IAAF World Championships
BOSTON ÛÓ Today, USA Track & Field (USATF)
announced that Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) High Performance
coach Terrence Mahon will serve as Team USA’s Coach of Women’s Middle
& Long Distance athletes at the IAAF World Championships
in Beijing, China, from August 22 to 30. Mahon will lead the American
contingent as our team competes against the world’s best athletes,
assisting with the team’s preparations and management.
“It is always an honor and thrill to represent
your country on the world stage,” said Mahon. “This will be my second
outdoor World Championships. It was a great experience being part of the
coaching staff at the 2011 World Championships
in Daegu, and I am excited to be part of the team again in 2015.”
Mahon joined the B.A.A. in September of 2013,
leading a high performance distance running initiative for the
organization and which is sponsored and supported by adidas. As the High
Performance Coach, Mahon has led the B.A.A. to national
titles, individual medals, and team championships. Considered one of
the top middle distance and long distance running coaches in America,
Mahon is credited with having developed or coached eight Olympians since
2005.
“We are delighted and honored that Terrence will
be representing the B.A.A. on the world stage, coaching Team USA at the
IAAF World Championships,” said B.A.A. Executive Director Tom Grilk.
“Terrence has helped further our tradition of
athletic excellence.”
Recently, Mahon’s guidance with the B.A.A. High
Performance team has led to a number of podium finishes. At the USA 10K
Team Championships, the B.A.A. took home a team national title, with
three B.A.A. runners finishing in the top 13.
At the 2015 USA Cross Country National
Championships in February, a pair of B.A.A. athletes finished in the top
six, thus qualifying for the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in
Guiyang, China.
At the 2015 USA Club Cross Country National
Championships, the B.A.A. won with a mere 43 points, as three athletes
recorded top ten finishes.
Among the athletes Mahon coaches on the B.A.A.
High Performance team are Jen Rhines, Elaina Balouris, Juliet Bottorff,
Katie Matthews, Sarah Pagano, Emily Lipari, and Cydney Ross.
Mahon is a veteran of representing the USA at
international competitions. In 2007 he was USATF’s Team Head Coach for
the Yokohama Women’s Ekiden Championships, and in 2010 he was USATF’s
Men’s Middle & Long Distance Coach for the IAAF World
Indoor Championships.
Most recently, Mahon was the Women’s Middle
& Long Distance Coach for the 2011 IAAF World Championships in
Daegu, South Korea.

Among his other coaching achievements, Mahon has
coached champions of the Chicago and London Marathons, and has guided
Olympic & World Championships finalists at distances ranging from
1500 meters through the marathon.
In 2009, Mahon was the winner of the USOC Doc
Counsilman Science Award, and in 2011 and 2012 received the USATF Center
of Excellence Award while part of the Mammoth Track Club.
