The White House on Monday issued new guidelines for Americans amid the growing coronavirus crisis in the United States.
During the now-daily White House Coronavirus Task Force briefing, President Donald Trump urged all Americans over the next 15 days not to gather in groups of more than 10, to stay away from bars, restaurants and food courts, and to avoid travel if possible.
Trump suggested that the coronavirus crisis could last until July or August.
A short time after the president finished his remarks in the White House briefing room, the Dow finished the trading day with one of its worst one-day point drop in history.
The Dow closed 2,999 points, or 12.9 percent lower than its position at the start of the day. The S&P 500 finished down nearly 12 percent, and the Nasdaq Composite ended down 12.3 percent.
There were more than 4,200 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the United States and 74 deaths as of Monday afternoon, according to Johns Hopkins.
